Sony Launches Industry’s First OLED Medical Monitor

Asia Pacific, October 3, 2011 – Sony launches the industry’s first organic light-emitting diode (OLED) medical monitor meeting the needs of the healthcare industry in critical monitoring during clinical endoscopic and surgical applications. Opening up a new chapter in medical monitoring history, the much anticipated unveiling of the PVM-2551MD 25-inch OLED medical monitor will take place, for the first time in Singapore at the Asia Pacific Digestive Week (1st – 4th October 2011).

OLED is a next generation flat-panel screen technology with far superior image quality and outperforms liquid-crystal display (LCD). As a pioneer in OLED technologies across industries, Sony now introduces the PVM-2551MD OLED medical monitor featuring Full HD OLED panel using Sony’s unique “Super Top Emission” structure and also comes equipped with an advanced processor that brings out the full performance of the OLED. The combination of these elements results in the display’s high-resolution, high contrast deep black colour, excellent response to motion, faithful colour reproduction and uniformity – all these impossible to achieve with the LCD monitors currently used in the medical industry.

The monitor not only allows tiny image details to be viewed clearly in applications such as endoscopy and surgical monitoring, but it also displays quick motion of surgical instruments and hands in fluidity, thereby eliminating stressful picture blur. Together, these factors surpass the demanding picture expression required for monitors used in medical fields.

In terms of aesthetics, the monitor pursues a clean design for safety and ease of installation factors. For example, the display surface and bezel (frame) around its periphery are completely flat and the corners of the chassis are made round to prevent dust from building up and offer clean operations. Adopting a splash-proof design, there are no ventilation holes on the chassis top. This prevents blood or drug solutions from entering the monitor, improving hygiene and health safety. The monitor complies with medical safety standards including UL60601-1 for the United States, CSA C22.2 No.601.1 for Canada, and EN 60601-1 for Europe, allowing for safe use around the world.

The monitor offers a “User Memory Function,” which allows settings of up to 20 patterns of preferred colour, contrast and brightness. It also incorporates a ‘Picture & Picture’ function to display two signal sources on the screen at the same time.

The PVM-2551MD also offers a horizontal image-flip function, which is required in endoscopic operations to display the image according to where the doctor stands. Packed to full extent with the high image-quality of OLED and Sony’s years of expertise in professional video monitors, the PVM-2551MD will be a revolutionary monitoring display solution for the medical field .
